Job Prospects (Nikki)

After I quit my job in August 2016, I was fortunate enough to receive my short-call teaching license for substitute teaching in Minnesota.

I have my four-year degree in Visual Communications, but I never thought I could get a teaching license without actually having an education degree. We found out about this teaching degree shortly after Tim’s contract ended in the summer of 2015, and it has truly been a lifesaver.

Anyway, after I received my teaching license, I started subbing as both a teacher and paraprofessional in our local preschool. I forgot how much I truly enjoy working with children. As the fall turned to winter, a special ed para position opened in one of the afternoon classes. I applied and got it – a whole 12 hours a week! It still enabled me to work on personal projects AND substitute teach while also guaranteeing hours each week.

Unfortunately, the school year ends. And it ended today.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been searching more and more for contract/consultant/freelance work. As the last day of school has quickly been approaching, I have shifted my focus to permanent, remote, full-time part-time employment.

As I have previously mentioned, I’m doing freelance writing as a professional Resume Writer, but my speed isn’t quite where it needs to be in order to make good money doing it. And while this does satisfy my need to write, it does not satisfy my need to be back in the digital marketing world.

Over Memorial Day weekend, I applied to 2 positions through LinkedIn that I just happened to see posted that Friday. 1 is for a Social Media Coordinator position and the other is for a Social Media and Content Marketing Manager position – both would get me back into the digital marketing realm. Luckily, they both contacted me to set up phone interviews – woot!

I had the first one today for the Social Media Coordinator position – a mere 20 hours per week managing all social media and potentially collaborating on Google Grants PPC ads for a national non-profit based out of Minneapolis. The call seemed to go really well – I’m crossing my fingers for a call back to meet the team in person!

The second position requested a phone interview Monday or Tuesday of next week. This one was posted through Digital People so I’ll first be interviewing with a recruiter and it is for a full-time position with a start-up company in Minneapolis. There was no mention of telcommuting, but it’s worth a shot to at least find out. And this did get me in contact with a recruiter – yay!

I’m also waiting to hear back on a potential contractor position at a distributed company editing profiles for freelancers. This would be ideal since I would be able to write and build up a decent income over time.

Oh! And there’s also the Extended School Year position I accepted with the school district as a Special Ed Paraprofessional which is 9 days in July, 4 hours per day.

So at least there’s currently a few things in the hopper. I’m not sure how we’re going to make ends meet in June, yet, but it’ll all come together. I’m sure of it. 🙂
